¿Vacaciones arruinadas por overbooking? Estos son tus derechos

  • Hosteltur
  • 11 May 2025
✈ Overbooking, common in the airline industry, is regulated under EU Regulation CE No. 261/2004. In 2024, Vueling (36%), Iberia (15%), Ryanair (7%), Air Europa (6%), and TAP Air Portugal (2%) had the highest rates of overbooked flights. Passengers affected by overbooking have rights including compensation (€250-€600 based on distance), information, care (meals, lodging), and a choice between refund or alternative transport. Claims can be filed with AESA within two years.

Descubren al único defensor de Airbnb

  • Redaccion Preferente
  • 10 May 2025
🏡 In the Balearic Islands, 90,000 new tourist accommodation spots were regulated this week, drawing from a housing stock of around 500,000 homes. This move has sparked criticism from unions, business associations, and environmental advocates due to its impact on local identity and housing accessibility. Airbnb's model has been blamed for a real estate bubble on the island, and its rapid spread has matched the room count that took 60 years for hotels to regulate. The vacation rental trend has also disrupted urban planning, reduced tax revenue, and created fewer jobs compared to traditional hotels.

La Unión Europea, incapaz de aplicar el control de fronteras ETIAS

  • Miguel Praga
  • 10 May 2025
🛫 The European Union's ETIAS program, initially set to start in November 2024, is now postponed to late 2026—a two-year delay. ETIAS, similar to systems in the US and UK, requires non-European travelers to fill an online form and pay €7, facilitating border control with pre-supplied information. It applies to travelers from countries including the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, UAE, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Paraguay, Costa Rica, among others. Equipment for this purpose has been installed at Spanish borders for over a year, with some already dismantled due to the delay.

Nuevos fraudes con el alquiler vacacional: destapan dinero negro y cómo evitan Airbnb

  • Redaccion Preferente
  • 10 May 2025
🏘️ Natalia Bueno, ex-president of the Real Estate Agents of Baleares, discussed fraud in vacation rentals, highlighting off-platform promotions in Germany, Sweden, or through repeat clients, often involving under-the-table payments. Mallorquins are relocating to the mainland due to housing cost hikes influenced by Airbnb, with some retirees moving to Valencia or the north on €600 pensions. Despite local identity concerns, authorities defend the right of Baleares families to benefit from tourism, recently legalizing 90,000 rental spots within an island housing stock of 500,000. This stance supports a mass-tourism model criticized by unions, local agencies like Aviba, and British agencies associated with ABTA.

Trump anuncia que también va a cambiar el control aéreo

  • Miguel Praga
  • 10 May 2025
🛫 Newark Airport, near New York, faces chaos with United cancelling dozens of daily flights due to air traffic control disorganization. Recently, a 90-second loss of contact with all planes posed an incalculable risk. The Trump Administration plans a "radical" air traffic control overhaul nationwide, not just Newark. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy blames the previous administration, citing neglect of equipment and funds in favor of social justice and climate balance. Trump vows change, announcing hiring of 2,000 new controllers with a 30% higher starting salary, and technical equipment upgrades, though slower in implementation.

Viajes del Imserso: W2M, contra la decadencia del programa

  • Miguel Praga
  • 9 May 2025
🏖 W2M, owned by Iberostar, partnered with Mundiplan to bid for Imserso's tourism program contract, aiming to improve the declining service. The Temporary Union of Companies (UTE), including IAG7, Alsa, and W2M (replacing Iberia), is developing a competitive proposal against Ávoris and Senior Live (UTE by Travel Live and Seniorplan). Final proposals are due by May 19. Imserso, addressing past unrealistic offers, has tightened penalties, with potential fines totaling up to €80 million.

Ryanair pierde una doble batalla judicial con Aena por las tasas

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 9 May 2025
✈️ Ryanair's appeals against Aena's 2022 airport charges were rejected by Spain's Audiencia Nacional, affirming the legality of a 3.17% interannual decrease. Despite Ryanair's argument for a 10.99% reduction and claims of pandemic costs being disproportionally charged, the court confirmed compliance with DORA regulations and CNMC's stance that 2020-2021 COVID-19 costs should be included in 2022 fees. The airline, also accusing Aena of abusing its dominant position, was ordered to pay €10,000 in legal costs and has the option to appeal further.

La matriz de Iberia detecta ya “cierta debilidad” en EEUU

  • Miguel Praga
  • 9 May 2025
🏥 IAG, parent company of Iberia and Vueling, feels the impact of Trump's policies, noticing weakness in US-origin leisure travel economy class sales, offset by strength in premium cabins. Latin America and Europe markets remain strong, North Atlantic demand robust. As of May 6, 80% booked for Q2 with higher revenues than previous year; 29% booked for H2, on par with 2024. CEO Luis Gallego cites resilient demand in all markets, especially premium cabins, amidst macroeconomic uncertainty. Concerns include new tariff regimes and geopolitical dialogue between US, Russia, China, EU, and UK affecting markets and passenger flows.

Tasa turística: la Generalitat aplaza la subida y lo comunica al sector

  • Hosteltur
  • 9 May 2025
🏕 In Catalonia, tourism tax is usually paid by guests to accommodations and later settled with the Catalan Tax Agency. Officials, Juli Fernández, Jaume Baró, and Cristina Lagé, briefed the tourism sector on plans to postpone the tax. A new decree with retroactive effect from May 1 will be approved next Tuesday to delay the tax hike initially set for May 1. This follows confusion at the Parlament on May 8, where the tax increase was theoretically validated. The hospitality industry's ConfeCat demands the immediate repeal of the decree law.
