The Social Hub abre establecimiento en Oporto tras 60 M € de inversión

🏡 The Social Hub inaugurated its first establishment in Oporto, Portugal on March 1st, marking its entry into the country as part of its expansion strategy. The 4-star hybrid accommodation represents a €60 million investment and covers 11,200 square meters. It aims to connect travelers, digital nomads, young professionals, and locals into a dynamic community, creating 30 new jobs. Already recognized with a B Corp certificate, the Hub will host over 200 community experiences annually and includes a gastronomic experience with local flavors, a rooftop cocktail bar, and a specialty coffee shop. It houses 310 rooms, with 271 hotel rooms and 39 residential apartments.

Las tres patas del caso Booking: cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí

🏨 In 2010, the German Competition Authority began investigating HRS for "wide parity clauses," resulting in a prohibition in 2013, confirmed in 2015. The German hotel association, Hotelverband Deutschland (IHA), demanded redress from HRS in late 2017 for excess pricing from 2006 to 2016, settling for €4 million in 2019 to 600 hotels. Similar practices led Italy, France, and Sweden to reach agreements with Booking.com to stop wide parity clauses for at least five years starting July 1, 2015, which Booking voluntarily extended across Europe. In 2020, IHA filed a damages action against Booking.com for the period of 2006-2015, which was questioned by the Amsterdam court, and the EU Court of Justice ruled the clauses anti-competitive in September. The German Supreme Court confirmed the anti-competitive nature of "narrow parity clauses" in May 2021, ruling against Booking.com. Booking.com's €413 million fine by the Spanish Competition Authority (CNMC) is under appeal. Eskariam, a law firm, is preparing a collective lawsuit in Spain, planning to file before the end of the year, expecting a six-year process.
