Begoña Gómez visitaba mucho más la OMT que Air Europa

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
🏢 Begoña Gómez frequently visited the World Tourism Organization (OMT) since the creation of Wakalua by Globalia, OMT, and Grupo Barrabés. Despite the innovation hub's operations center being located at Grupo Barrabés' headquarters, she held constant meetings with the OMT's Secretary-General and senior officials. Notably, Gómez visited Javier Hidalgo's office in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid at least twice, once recorded during the first year of the pandemic. Comparatively, her visits to Globalia were minimal versus those to the OMT. Concerns rise over potential influence peddling regarding the Air Europa bailout, amidst the so-called "caso Begoña.

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
✈ Iberia's planned acquisition of Air Europa has come under scrutiny by the European Commission, noting Qatar Airways' 25% ownership in IAG, which raises concerns about non-European influence on the merged entity, not considered a 'true European champion' like Lufthansa. Key issues focus on competition and market dominance, particularly concerning routes operated by Air Europa.

Bruselas desvela por qué tumbó la operación Iberia-Air Europa

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
✈ Air Europa's acquisition by Iberia (IAG) failed due to competition concerns from the European Commission, influenced by dominant Germany and France. Spain remained neutral during the crucial phase. Vice President Margrethe Vestager highlighted the merger's potential to harm competition on numerous Spanish routes, fearing higher prices or lower service quality. IAG’s offer to cede 52% of Air Europa's flights didn't fully address these issues. This is the second failed attempt after concerns in 2021; Air Europa is now stronger than before, complicating solutions.

Otra toma de un aeropuerto en Alemania por los ecologistas

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
✈ Leipzig Airport in Germany reopened at 12:30 PM yesterday after eco-activists from "Last Generation" occupied runways early in the day, using a strong adhesive to attach themselves. While one of two runways resumed operations by mid-morning, passenger flights faced delays. "Last Generation" protests Germany's lack of a fossil fuel exit plan, previously disrupting major hubs like Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe's top three busiest airports.

Hidalgo, eufórico tras el fiasco de Iberia: “Me da alegría por mis nietos”

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
🏩 Juan José Hidalgo, presidente de Globalia, expressed joy over the failed acquisition of Air Europa by Iberia, which he sees as beneficial for competition in Spain and specifically Madrid. The nearly five-year negotiation concluded without a deal, which Hidalgo believes will save Spanish citizens money. He promises Air Europa will continue to compete with IAG, who has received government support. Hidalgo states Air Europa will repay its ICO loan soon, holds over €250 million in bank funds, and plans to renew its fleet, including adding 787-900 aircraft and updating 737-800s, forecasting the repayment of SEPI debt within two to three years.

Volotea, la que más llora sin Iberia y Air Europa juntas

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
🛫 Grupo Abra and Spanish airline Volotea terminated their agreement on June 25 to acquire Air Europa routes from IAG, after Iberia informed the European Commission it would not purchase Air Europa. Volotea, led by Carlos Muñoz, aimed to establish a strong base in Madrid, serving over 130 destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean, plus 20 in Europe starting in the first quarter of 2025. The deal's collapse forces Volotea to continue its growth organically through new aircraft and routes.

Air Europa-Iberia: las consecuencias si falla la venta

  • Miguel Praga
  • 1 August 2024
✈️ Iberia's potential failure to acquire Air Europa may soon be confirmed due to European Commission obstacles. The failed integration could significantly impact the Spanish economy, including a potential €50 million indemnity to the Hidalgo family. Barajas Airport's hub stature is at risk, threatening Spain's business competitiveness and tourism, which accounts for 15.2% of the GDP. Paris leads with 139 intercontinental destinations, while Madrid has 80, aiming for 100. IAG's thwarted plans included 850-1,000 new flight combinations, job creation (1,250-1,800 positions), a €30 million annual increase in Madrid Airport's revenue, and an additional 16,000 tonnes of cargo traffic.

  • Miguel Praga
  • 1 August 2024
🏖 More than 120,000 vacation homes are affecting the Balearic Islands, an area with a population of one million. The Forum de la Societat Civil, a left-wing group against tourism, proposed 200 measures excluding the regulation of vacation rentals. This critical issue, causing an influx of tourists and rental cars, remains untouched despite its significant impact on the local market.
