Gabriel Escarrer: “¿Hacia la segunda balearización?”

  • Hosteltur
  • 10 April 2025
🏨 Hotel capacity in the Balearic Islands increased by only 5% since 2015, while vacation rental homes soared by 135%, with 1 out of every 25 homes dedicated to tourism—the highest ratio in Spain. Pollença leads in tourist housing, second only to Yaiza and La Oliva in the Canary Islands. Meliá Hotels International's CEO Gabriel Escarrer points out that while hoteliers have invested in quality over quantity since the 2012 Tourism Law reform, the “powerful landlords' association” Habtur continues to saturate the market and push residential housing out. The government's planned decree favors the rental tourism model without addressing the housing crisis, potentially leading to a "second Balearization" where quality tourists may decline due to unsustainable conditions.

La vivienda turística divide al sector: cruce de posturas en Mallorca

  • Hosteltur
  • 9 April 2025
🏠 The Gobierno de las Islas Baleares' draft decree aims to reduce tourism saturation and illegal offerings has been questioned by the Federación Empresarial Hotelera de Mallorca (FEHM), citing no improvement in housing access or resident cohabitation. FEHM insists on expiring temporary rental authorizations to revert residences to original use, highlighting over 98,000 vacation rental places in 8 years. Habtur counters, blaming hotel industry growth for urban pressure and social issues, while defending vacation rentals as beneficial for local families' economies.

Las agencias de viajes, ante los nuevos enemigos de la distribución

  • Hosteltur
  • 9 April 2025
🏨 Despite the challenge of direct sales, travel agencies in Spain persist, as evidenced by AON data showing an average of 3.5 surety policies issued annually, indicating a growth in new agency openings. At the FAAV's second convention, April 3-6 in Morocco, it was noted that agencies account for about 40% of air ticket sales, 30% in the hotel sector, and 20-25% in rail transportation. Even amidst increased travel costs post-pandemic, agencies maintain an essential role, with sales margins remaining tight. Notably, agencies have not declined since the late 90s, holding a steady 30% share in trip bookings. Key players like Iberia Cards and Binter affirm their commitment to intermediary channels, with Binter distribution through agents reaching up to 80% on some routes.
