Playas inteligentes: ni falta que hace

  • Miguel Praga
  • 4 August 2024
🌊 The "Smart Beaches" project has been launched, offering an electronic system for constant monitoring of beach risks, number of visitors, wind, and water quality. The system signifies a shift from the simplicity of beachgoing with just a towel to a data-driven experience focused on bacterial risks, wind, water quality, and potential nearby acids, requiring beachgoers to be alert and informed through tablets and alarms. The concept raises questions about whether this evolution is in fact a devolution from relaxed, carefree beach experiences.

Virgin deja de volar a China

  • Miguel Praga
  • 4 August 2024
✈ Virgin Atlantic, the UK's second long-haul airline, will cease its only route to China, specifically to Shanghai, starting October 2023. The airline has operated this route since 1999, with interruptions due to the prolonged pandemic in China. It faces competition from China Eastern and British Airways. The route's suspension is due to increased flight distances from avoiding Russian airspace since the Ukraine war and China's delayed return to normalcy in long-haul flights, affecting competitors too. Virgin now focuses on more profitable destinations: India, Maldives, South Africa, Nigeria, the Caribbean, the US, and Canada. Delta owns 49 percent of Virgin, aligning their route strategies for growth.

Marcha atrás: de nuevo limitan los líquidos en los aeropuertos

  • Miguel Praga
  • 4 August 2024
🛫 Starting September 1, the EU reinstates the 100ml liquid limit for carry-on luggage despite new CT scanners in airports. The UK, with some airports already equipped with these scanners, allowed more than 100ml and electronic devices without removal, yet has not reversed this decision, expecting full updates by 2025. Full EU compliance could take years, with Italy's CT-equipped airports now also reverting to enforcing the liquid restriction.

Hidalgo, por sus nietos y por España

  • Miguel Praga
  • 4 August 2024
💰 Juan José Hidalgo, presidente de Air Europa, expresses joy for his grandchildren and Spain after Iberia's resignation, seemingly forgetting his workers. Despite affirming Air Europa's viability alone, internal consensus is that sustaining the airline without Iberia is a "mission impossible" due to overwhelming debt, the desire of his children to sell, and increasing competition. Air Europa must repay ICO credit, SEPI aid, and interest, while facing a grim financial forecast and tough competition from Iberia intensified by EU regulations.

Japón prohíbe las maletas que tienen tracción propia

  • Miguel Praga
  • 3 August 2024
🛴 In Japan, motorized suitcases capable of 13 km/h have led to restrictions; users must have driving licenses and safety gear. Japanese airports announced usage bans without penalties yet, and police notified sellers about street-use limitations. A Chinese woman in her thirties faced conviction in Osaka. Europe has not widely adopted these suitcases, but their spread seems imminent.

El gobierno de los burócratas

  • Miguel Praga
  • 3 August 2024
📊 The European Commission in Brussels wields vast discretionary power over commercial competition without objective norms to limit decision-making. Iberia, unsure of regulatory outcomes, abandoned its Air Europa acquisition, while Lufthansa's ITA purchase faced similar uncertainties. Dominant market positions are scrutinized; Mercadona and Ryanair must be cautious despite gaining influence through quality and competitive pricing. Amadeus, with an 80% market share, and global tech giants face less regulatory attention. Consumer protection in aviation raises questions about competition and public subsidies. Clearer competition regulations are needed to prevent corruption and ensure market access for new competitors.

  • Miguel Praga
  • 3 August 2024
💰 IAG, the parent company of Iberia, renounced the acquisition of Air Europa, which was followed by a 5% stock price surge. Financial data for the first six months showed strong performance with revenues up from 13.6 billion euros in 2023 to 14.7 billion. The North Atlantic routes, strongholds of Aer Lingus and British Airways, are thriving, prompting IAG to announce dividend payments. Profits remained consistent with the previous year.

Air New Zealand renuncia a su meta de CO2

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
✈ Air New Zealand renounced its 2030 emission reduction targets due to unavailability of efficient aircraft and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The company initially aimed to cut emissions by 29% by 2030. With SAF being costly and in short supply, the airline faces delays from manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus, and currently operates planes that pollute up to 15% more. Now, Air New Zealand targets zero emissions by 2050 with interim goals.

Wizz Air se hunde por una fortísima caída de ingresos

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
🛫 Wizz Air, Hungary's low-cost airline, projects 2023 revenues of €350-450 million, falling short of the expected €500-600 million. This resulted in an 18% stock market value drop, the largest since the pandemic. To maintain service on popular routes, the airline leased planes with crews due to Pratt & Whitney engine repairs, incurring significant costs. The engine manufacturer may cover some losses, with issues persisting for 2-3 years. CEO Joszef Varadi anticipates ceasing plane rentals by summer's end, lessening financial impact.

Begoña Gómez visitaba mucho más la OMT que Air Europa

  • Miguel Praga
  • 2 August 2024
🏢 Begoña Gómez frequently visited the World Tourism Organization (OMT) since the creation of Wakalua by Globalia, OMT, and Grupo Barrabés. Despite the innovation hub's operations center being located at Grupo Barrabés' headquarters, she held constant meetings with the OMT's Secretary-General and senior officials. Notably, Gómez visited Javier Hidalgo's office in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid at least twice, once recorded during the first year of the pandemic. Comparatively, her visits to Globalia were minimal versus those to the OMT. Concerns rise over potential influence peddling regarding the Air Europa bailout, amidst the so-called "caso Begoña.
