Europa obliga a Lufthansa a dar vuelos baratos a Condor

  • Miguel Praga
  • 17 January 2025
✈ Lufthansa must continue offering fair prices to Condor for connections from German cities to Frankfurt, as ruled by the European Commission, to maintain competitiveness. Condor, once owned by Lufthansa and later Thomas Cook, struggled post-pandemic and post-Thomas Cook bankruptcy. A British investment fund acquired Condor, improved its fleet, and now successfully transports passengers from Germany to the U.S. and Caribbean via Frankfurt. Lufthansa, introducing its own airline Discovery and ending fair prices to Condor, faced legal challenges. However, the European Commission intervention mandates maintaining beneficial agreements for Condor temporarily while reviewing dominant airline agreements on transatlantic routes.

Iberia's Airbus A330 from Madrid to San Juan and World2Fly's A350 from Madrid to Santo Domingo performed air holds but landed safely at their destinations. Air Transat, Spirit Airlines, JetBlue, and Amazon Air were also affected.

Volotea rebajó en más de 6 millones la multa de Consumo

  • Miguel Praga
  • 17 January 2025
✈ Volotea, led by Carlos Muñoz, reduced an initial €7.7 million fine to €1.1 million (seven times less) after successfully appealing for passenger rights violations with carry-on luggage fees. Other airlines—Ryanair (€107.7 million), Vueling (€39.2 million), Easyjet (€29 million), and Norwegian (€1.6 million)—had their fines upheld. Volotea's reduction was due to actual income from carry-on fees being much lower than estimated by Consumo, at €317,134.23 instead of €5.9 million. Volotea's total penalties included €989,999 for baggage fees, €100,001 for seat reservation surcharges for minors' companions, €10,001 for not accepting cash payments on flights, and €11,000.01 for misleading omissions and lack of clarity in pricing.

Aena advierte a Ryanair: “Sus exigencias podrían ser ilegales”

  • Miguel Praga
  • 16 January 2025
✈ Ryanair cuts over 800,000 seats at regional airports in Spain, including closures in Valladolid and Jerez, blaming Aena's high fees and ineffective incentive plans. Aena refutes, stating the average fee of €10.35 per passenger remains frozen from March 1 and is one of Europe's lowest. Despite Ryanair's 8.7% activity increase in Spanish airports in 2024, Aena warns their demands could breach Law 18/2014 and potentially be illegal or considered state aid by the EU. Regional airports offer incentives that can lower fees to around €2 per passenger.

Ryanair suprime 800.000 plazas en aeropuertos regionales de España

  • Miguel Praga
  • 16 January 2025
✈ Ryanair announces significant cutbacks at Spanish regional airports in response to high fees from Aena, ceasing operations in Jerez and Valladolid, and reducing flights in Vigo (-61%/40,000 seats), Santiago (-28%), Zaragoza (-20%), Asturias (-11%), and Santander (-5%). More than 8 million seats will be cut, slashing capacity by 18% and eliminating 12 routes, impacting regional connectivity, jobs, and tourism. Despite this, Ryanair plans to increase seats by 1.5 million at Spain's busiest airports in the summer of 2025. CEO Eddie Wilson criticizes Aena for not incentivizing airlines and plans to reallocate resources to more competitive European markets.

  • Miguel Praga
  • 16 January 2025
🏩 Air Nostrum rearranged its payment schedule for the €111 million state aid received in May 2022, consolidating the return in 2028 instead of starting in 2026 with €30 million payments each year until 2028. This renegotiation with SEPI does not affect the principal or interest of the debt. Additionally, the airline repaid €61.5 million of a €133 million ICO loan by late summer 2024, with €44.2 million for debt and €17.3 million for interest.
