Meliá crece a doble dígito con Canarias a la cabeza

  • Miguel Praga
  • 17 March 2025
🏨 Meliá Hotels International forecasts a double-digit revenue increase for upcoming Easter and summer seasons, especially due to higher occupancy rates. Canary Islands lead in rates and occupancy for the vacation segment, followed by mainland coasts and Balearic Islands, with the latter two showing the most growth from the previous year. Over 70% of the company's properties in the Balearic Islands and 100% on the Spanish coasts will be operational for Easter, with all Canary Islands hotels at full capacity. Summer bookings exhibit a double-digit income increase, notably in the Canary Islands, Balearics, and coasts. Urban hotels report higher year-over-year revenues, with high occupancy in Sevilla, Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, and Palma, and the highest rates in Sevilla, Alicante, Barcelona, and Madrid. Concerns persist over geopolitical uncertainty that may abruptly alter the situation.

“Los impagos del Gobierno pueden asfixiar a Canarias y Baleares”

  • Miguel Praga
  • 17 March 2025
📍 The Spanish Government owes airlines €810 million in subsidies for resident airfare discounts in Baleares, Canarias, Ceuta, and Melilla. Juan Molas, the head of the tourism board, warns that continued non-payment and mismanagement threaten the air connectivity of these key tourist destinations, potentially reducing flight offerings and harming tourism and local residents. ALA predicts the debt could reach €1.5 billion by 2025, forcing airlines into economic distress and possible route cuts or frequency reductions.

Maroto lidera el ranking de los pésimos en Turismo

  • Miguel Praga
  • 17 March 2025
📖 Reyes Maroto, former Spanish Minister of Tourism, received criticism for her performance; considered the worst by many in her field. She faced political setbacks, including electoral defeats when pitched against Ayuso and Almeida by Pedro Sánchez. Her secretary of state, Isabel Oliver, was preferred over her PP counterpart. Maroto's tenure was marked by controversial remarks and actions, such as the amplified knife photo incident and her comments regarding Bildu and Ayuso, which she later retracted. No tourism industry figurehead recognizes any merit in her contributions.

  • 17 March 2025
💰 World2Meet (W2M), owned by Iberostar, aims to manage Imserso's travel program, potentially entering the public tender in May. W2M's strategy—going solo or forming alliances—is undecided until tender details are released in the coming weeks. Competing for the lucrative contract are Ávoris, the incumbent with a sanction for unfulfilled promises, Mundiplan, Nautalia (Travel Live), and Senior Plan, leveraging artificial intelligence for a quality bid.

Las Fallas llegan con una caída de demanda turística

  • Miguel Praga
  • 16 March 2025
🏠 In Valencia and its surroundings, tourism occupancy rates were 70% over the weekend, below the last four years' figures. Last Friday, bookings for Sunday, March 23, were just 58%, compared to 79% in 2024. The accommodation coordination service projects an 11% decrease in total sector revenue from last year, with 57% of business owners expecting a downturn and only 25% seeing an improvement. The shift is attributed to St. Joseph's Day falling on a Wednesday, impacting travel plans. Despite concerns in lodging, local consumption is expected to maintain restaurant business, and lower saturation may make the Fallas festival more welcoming.

El aeropuerto de Toulouse demanda al Estado por su hundimiento

  • Miguel Praga
  • 16 March 2025
🛫 In late 2019, Eiffage acquired 49.9% of Toulouse's Blagnac airport from Chinese group Casil, becoming the concession holder until 2046. The airport had 9.8 million passengers in 2018. Eiffage is now suing the French state due to a business downturn, with passenger numbers dropping over 18% to 7.8 million in 2024 after Easyjet and Ryanair left. A new solidarity tax on air traffic and a 23% reduction in night flights due to pollution have been introduced. Other French airports are suffering too, with Lyon losing 10.9% of travelers and Bordeaux 14.4%, while Beauvais has grown by 64% over the past five years.

La saturación turística autoinfligida

  • Miguel Praga
  • 16 March 2025
🚩 Tourist numbers in the Balearic Islands have grown significantly over the past 20 years, despite political rhetoric. Tourists, previously confined to specific zones, are now pervasive across local areas, causing a sense of overcrowding. Modern changes, such as private homes doubling as hotels and tourists renting cars instead of using coaches, have exacerbated the impact of tourism. Unmanaged urban traffic and the influx of tourism employees seeking housing have also contributed to the saturation. Even without an increase in visitor numbers, these factors would intensify the perceived invasion.

Una sentencia provoca un ‘agujero’ en TAP de Portugal

  • Miguel Praga
  • 15 March 2025
🛩 TAP, a Portuguese airline, faced a legal setback as the Supreme Court of Lisbon ruled that workers on fixed-term contracts should receive the same pay as permanent employees. The ruling could cost TAP between 200 and 300 million euros, far exceeding the initially anticipated worst-case scenario of 37 million euros. This decision directly affects four litigant workers but may inspire similar claims from others. The ruling also potentially benefits some of the 1514 employees who departed the company during the pandemic.
