  • Miguel Praga
  • 22 March 2025
🔎 The UCO is set to deliver the final report on the Air Europa bailout case (Caso Begoña) to Judge Juan Carlos Peinado of Madrid's Court No. 41, to determine if there was influence peddling by President's wife, Begoña Gómez. The report analyses the €475 million state aid to Air Europa. Gómez had secret meetings with Globalia CEO Javier Hidalgo on June 24 and July 16, 2020, before the government created a €10 billion fund, from which the aid came.

Y Escarrer no se mordió la lengua…

  • Miguel Praga
  • 22 March 2025
📍 Gabriel Escarrer recently spoke at the presentation of the Solytur program in Madrid, marking a strong institutional declaration as president of Exceltur. Criticizing Spanish political leaders' capabilities without naming them, he spared only Ayuso. Escarrer also targeted Airbnb for unregulated tourist accommodation. As he prepares to leave Exceltur, his successor faces a significant challenge, especially after replacing the long-serving executive vice president with Oscar Perelli. Escarrer's impact at Exceltur contrasts with Jorge Marichal's less successful and low-profile tenure at the hotel association.

La apuesta de España por el turismo chino: es el que más gasta y huye de las playas

  • Miguel Praga
  • 22 March 2025
📍 In 2024, Spain welcomed 93.8 million foreign tourists, with 647,801 coming from China, marking a 66.7% increase from the previous year. Chinese tourists spend an average of €2,958 over 10.3 nights, or €288 per day, compared to American tourists who spend €2,113 over 7.7 nights, or €273 daily. Chinese tourists prefer cultural and luxury tourism, travel mostly in couples, avoid nightlife, favor five-star hotels, and plan their trips months in advance. Enhanced flight connectivity, such as the Barcelona-Shanghai route by Air China and increased summer frequencies by Cathay Pacific, contributed to the growth in Chinese tourism to Spain.

El culpable no vive en el norte

🚩 Seven anti-tourism activist groups in Mallorca wrote a letter to visitors asking them to refrain from coming, blaming tourists for the island's tourism saturation crisis. The letter suggests Mallorca's half-a-million hotel accommodations, made in the last century, and the recent approval of 100,000 legal tourist apartment and home spaces by the last government, are not the tourists' fault. No political party, not even the left-wing ones, suggest eliminating tourist accommodations in the Balearics, unlike Barcelona's planned suspension of 10,000 vacation apartment permits by 2028. The anti-tourism letter expresses hostility and lack of hospitality towards visitors.

Japón crea un modelo con precios turísticos más altos

  • Miguel Praga
  • 21 March 2025
🏕 Japan targets 60 million tourists by 2030 but implements a dual pricing system to combat overtourism. Foreigners will pay 8,800 yen versus 6,930 yen for locals at Junguria Okinawa Park opening this July. Himeji Castle differentiates by residence, not nationality. Similar policies exist in Thailand (Emerald Temple) and India (Taj Mahal). Ordinary tourist expenses like hotels, consumption, and transportation remain unaffected.

El descuento de residentes, en el alambre por la inacción del Gobierno

  • Miguel Praga
  • 21 March 2025
🛫 Javier Gándara, president of the Asociación de Líneas Aéreas (ALA), warns about a financial strain caused by the Spanish Government's non-payment of subsidies owed to airlines for resident discounts in the Canary Islands, Balearics, Ceuta, and Melilla. The unpaid amount for 2024 reaches €425 million, nearly depleting the 2025 budget of €560 million, initially allocated to cover these expenses. The expected cost for 2025 is €1.250 billion. Airline capacity between the Canary Islands and the mainland increased by 9.6% to 61.81 million seats in 2024, and connections between the Balearics and the mainland rose by 6% to 55 million seats.

The incident occurred when the individual attempted to book a flight from Berlin to Gran Canaria. They are seeking over £4,000 (around €4,800) in compensation and demand a change in the airline's platform. The Turkish lira fell nearly 6%, and the stock market plummeted about 9%, prompting state bank intervention. WhatsApp and X were blocked on Thursday.
