Boeing acuerda con las familias del avión etíope y evita el juicio

  • Miguel Praga
  • 8 April 2025
🚀 Families suing Boeing over a 737 Max crash in Ethiopia, which occurred on March 10, 2019, reached a last-minute out-of-court settlement before the trial, set to begin in Chicago to evaluate two wrongful death and negligence claims, could commence. The crash was the second to mar the 737 Max's record, happening just six minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa. The case withdrawal followed previous individual settlements, yet a separate legal challenge by the U.S. Department of Justice accuses Boeing of falsifying information to aviation authorities throughout various accident investigations.

Málaga: empieza la retirada de licencias de viviendas turísticas

  • Miguel Praga
  • 8 April 2025
🏗️ In Málaga, vacation home owners began receiving notifications from the Junta de Andalucía about the public decision to cancel their market trading permits due to the City Council's move to cancel some existing rental homes, effective retroactively since February 22, 2024. Mayor Francisco de la Torre declared in June last year that only vacation homes with independent access to electricity, water, and phone would be allowed to operate. The rescission of rights only affects those who haven't appealed against the initial decision. Experts see these recent notifications as nearly irreversible. The measure aims to address cohabitation issues caused by tourist-occupied flats in residential buildings, rather than housing scarcity or rising rents.

  • 8 April 2025
💰 Jorge Marichal, president of Ashotel, coerced the newly formed hotel association in Canarias into signing a document meant to show unity to unions, media, and public opinion. The presidents and delegates of Barceló Hoteles, Riu, Meliá, and Iberostar were initially opposed but eventually conceded. Simón Pedro Barceló, head of a leading tourism group, openly opposed but later reconciled with Marichal, demonstrating the complex dynamics within the Spanish hotel industry.

Barceló, sobre el negocio de Ávoris: “Es mucho riesgo y poco margen”

  • Miguel Praga
  • 7 April 2025
🏨 Simón Pedro Barceló, co-president of Barceló, prefers the hotel business over tourism distribution, citing higher sales margins. Despite Barceló being the top Spanish tourism group in revenue, Ávoris's high volume, risk, and low margins during the pandemic led to hundreds of millions of euros in losses. Barceló aims to recover over €300 million in negative results recorded by Ávoris between 2020 and 2022, with a focus on profitability.

Italia frena la entrada de trenes franceses en sus rutas internas

  • Miguel Praga
  • 7 April 2025
🚃 SNCF, the French railway company, has ordered 15 high-speed trains for routes in Italy: 9 for Turin-Naples, 4 for Turin-Venice, and 2 for Paris-Milan. The project is delayed due to Italian authorities not granting the necessary slots, aiming for only 15% of slots requested. Maintenance centers and train manufacturers are also not meeting expectations. Consequently, the new Italian routes are expected to launch in 2027, one year behind the initial schedule, with SNCF targeting a 15% market share, despite the presence of two existing operators, Trenitalia and Italo. Italian competition authorities are investigating potential obstruction by local rail services. It's still uncertain if SNCF will adopt a low-cost model in Italy as it may have in Spain.

Gaspart irrumpe en la campaña por el control de la OMT

  • Miguel Praga
  • 7 April 2025
🏥 Joan Gaspart, a hotelier from Catalonia and friend of former Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero, supports the current Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili in his campaign for re-election at the World Tourism Organization (OMT) elections in May. Pololikashvili, despite opposition, seeks votes from hesitant countries to remain in his position. Zapatero has contacted Morocco for support, while former politician Bono has attempted to gain the Dominican Republic's favor for Pololikashvili, although the country remains noncommittal. Other countries like Venezuela and Guinea, where Zapatero's influence extends, are not OMT members.

✈ Emirates' Airbus A380 with registration A6 EDF resumed flights after a 5-year hiatus, departing from Dubai to Cairo. At 19 years old, the aircraft is not considered old and has reentered service with Emirates, which faces delays in its Boeing 777X order yet to be certified. The reactivated A380 has been incorporated into the fleet without restrictions, covering routes to Zurich, Jedah, and Glasgow. Reactivation processes for grounded aircraft are costly but necessary due to new fleet delivery delays from Airbus and Boeing.
