Iberia: “Un día que debería haber sido catastrófico fue notable”

  • Miguel Praga
  • 29 April 2025
✈️ On April 28, Spain experienced a near 12-hour nationwide blackout affecting all sectors. However, Iberia Airlines, led by Corporate Director Juan Cierco, managed to operate almost normally despite the power outage. Airports, coordinated by AENA, maintained functionality, resulting in Iberia barely canceling flights. The airline sector demonstrated professionalism and resilience, with the Airline Association (ALA) reporting that 94% of scheduled flights were operated, totaling 5,656 out of 6,000 planned flights. This event underlined the sector's robustness compared to a similar 4-hour power cut at Heathrow weeks earlier, which resulted in total chaos and flight cancellations.

Iberia y Air Europa: cambios gratis pese a no sufrir cancelaciones

  • Miguel Praga
  • 29 April 2025
✈ Iberia (including Iberia Express) and Air Europa offer flexibility for date changes, despite intending to operate all scheduled flights except those to Brussels, canceled due to a strike in Belgium. Iberia had to cancel only 26 of 247 programmed flights, sparing long-haul routes. The airlines accommodate changes due to difficulties reaching airports and the blackout in Spain and Portugal. Wings to Claim CEO Carlos Corbalán stated blackout-related disruptions aren't eligible for claims due to the national emergency status.

  • 29 April 2025
🛫 On a single day, the Aena network managed 6,000 scheduled flights with only 344 cancellations, despite a communication failure at Enaire's control center in Sevilla. Half of the Iberian Peninsula's airspace appeared empty due to this issue, as depicted in the Flightradar24 image. Enaire operates five control centers in Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Palma de Mallorca, and Gran Canaria, with traffic diverted to adjacent airspace for safety.

La advertencia de Aena a los pasajeros con vuelos previstos para hoy

  • Miguel Praga
  • 29 April 2025
🛫 All Spanish airports remain operational despite a power outage that led to the cancellation of 334 out of 6,000 scheduled flights. Aena advises passengers to check public transport status and consult airlines for possible rescheduling. Airports have adjusted their schedules overnight to accommodate rebooked passengers and report no significant overcrowding at terminals. The flight reductions were mainly due to safety precautions related to telecommunications, states Minister Óscar Puente.

  • 29 April 2025
🚃 High-speed and long-distance train services in Spain are gradually resuming after a complete halt due to a power outage. Lines restored include Madrid-Barcelona, Madrid-Valencia/Murcia/Alicante, Madrid-Basque Country, and Madrid-Algeciras. Madrid-Pamplona resumes with delays, and Madrid-Sevilla uses road service between Sevilla-Córdoba. Service is still suspended for routes like Madrid-Santander and Barcelona-Alicante (Euromed). Renfe announces passengers can request refunds or changes at no cost, and that services will be progressively reestablished throughout the day.

Ryanair: Malta ha de pedir la excepción insular en Europa

  • Miguel Praga
  • 27 April 2025
✈ Malta Air, a subsidiary of Ryanair, has transformed Malta into a tourist hotspot, not due to Air Malta, the state airline, but because of favorable conditions requested by the Irish airline. Ryanair now opposes Europe's potential aviation tax increase, pushing Malta to advocate for a tax exception for islands. David O’Brien, president of Malta Air, argues that peripheral countries with limited travel alternatives, like Ireland, Cyprus, and Malta, will be unfairly penalized by environmental taxes and restricted by the lack of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).

Imserso: 40 años de historia y un presente decadente

  • Miguel Praga
  • 26 April 2025
🏖 The Imserso program was created in 1985 to generate employment and enliven winter tourism in Spain. At the time, the average pension was about 200 euros, and few retirees could afford to travel. The goal was to create one job per seven pensionists traveling, which revitalized winter-deserted tourist areas. Forty years later, the program is in decline, facing criticism for management, service quality, and insufficient compensation for hotels, which lose money by hosting pensionists at a cost of 34 euros per person while only receiving 26 euros. Despite some positive changes such as a 50-euro flat rate for the lowest pensions and allowing pets, the future of Imserso remains uncertain amid industry changes and extended hotel seasons.
