La relación de Gómez con Air Europa en la España donde nunca pasa nada

  • Juan Mestre
  • 15 February 2025
📸 Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, allegedly influenced the government's decision to rescue Air Europa. Víctor de Aldama, a commission agent, confirmed Gómez's involvement in discussions about the airline's financial aid. The airline was reportedly losing one million euros daily. Gómez had seven meetings with Aldama and a phone conversation with Sánchez in front of Aldama and Javier Hidalgo. Wakalua, a Globalia subsidiary, agreed to pay 25,000 euros annually to Gómez's foundation. The issue remains largely unnoticed by Spanish media and public.

Canarias: hoteles quitan servicios por el alto absentismo laboral

  • Juan Mestre
  • 11 February 2025
🚧 Labor absenteeism in the Canary Islands affects 8.1% of the region's economic activity, costing €2.4 billion annually. The tourism sector is particularly impacted, with hotels and restaurants in Tenerife experiencing staff shortages, sometimes operating with only one out of every three positions filled. The Canary Islands have the highest labor absenteeism rate, with 61,000 workers absent for an average of 25 days per year. Business owners seek solutions, while unions oppose anonymous tip-off systems for reporting unjustified absences.

El plan de Sánchez: asumir el control de Air Europa y arrinconar a los Hidalgo

  • Juan Mestre
  • 10 February 2025
✈ Air Europa must repay €475 million rescue funds by 2026 or risk SEPI taking over 50% control. The Spanish government has targeted the airline for potential control. Air Europa is seeking new partners and a bank loan to repay SEPI in Q1 of this year. Companies have repaid 22% of the €2.073 billion pandemic aid. Air Nostrum restructured a €111 million aid repayment and Volotea postponed a €36.2 million payment. SEPI offers ordinary and participative rescues, with the latter allowing debt-to-equity conversion.

Reducción de la jornada laboral: la millonaria factura que pagaría el sector turístico

  • Juan Mestre
  • 8 February 2025
🏖 The Spanish Government's labor hour reduction to 37.5 hours per week could cost the tourism sector €2.348 billion, raising labor costs by 4.9% and decreasing profits by 8.1%. Exceltur's analysis indicates an 80.4% impact on tourism workers, totaling 222.2 million reduced work hours annually. Sectors most affected: restoration (€1.029 billion, 19.1% profit reduction), transport (€599.7 million, 7.8%), and accommodation (€403 million, 6.1%). The measure, supported by unions but not the employer's association, requires Congress approval, where its future remains uncertain.

“Los precios de los hoteles de Mallorca son adecuados a nuestra oferta”

  • Juan Mestre
  • 7 February 2025
🏨 Javier Vich, a hotelier managing Summum, a 14-hotel chain associated with Meliá, recently took over as president of the Mallorca Hotel Association. Despite rejecting the Balearic eco-tax increase for tourists, he asserts it won't impact the upcoming tourist season. Vich witnessed a minor slowdown in early bookings, especially from the UK market, at Fitur but remains unperturbed. He advocates for the current hotel pricing in Mallorca, citing a significant transformation in the sector over the past 10-12 years with diverse offerings for all budgets. Mallorca now attracts luxury tourism that wasn't present before, and Vich stresses the subjectivity of pricing debates, emphasizing quality and service. The hotel industry is ready to adjust to demand fluctuations, with no observed downturn necessitating price reductions. Vich also addresses the challenge of illegal vacation rentals and emphasizes the importance of addressing broader issues like housing and mobility that indirectly affect the tourism industry. He acknowledges competition from emerging destinations like Turkey and Albania, stressing the importance of maintaining safety as a key factor for success in the upcoming season. Finally, he contextualizes the issue of 'tourism-phobia' in Mallorca as a minority-driven phenomenon, exacerbated by infrastructural and housing deficiencies.
