El Gobierno paga más a los hoteles por inmigrantes que por los clientes del Imserso

  • Juan Mestre
  • 30 August 2024
🏖 Participating establishments in the senior program claim to operate at a loss. The Spanish government invests more money on immigrant lodging than the Imserso tourists, providing €37 per day for immigrants compared to €26 for Imserso tourists. The government has spent at least €60 million on immigrant hotel accommodations. One-third of 52 hotels in the Valencian Community, initially part of the Imserso program for 2024/2025, have dropped out due to low compensation, with Ávoris, the winning bidder, facing contract issues. In Ibiza, local institutions supplement hotel payments to attract Imserso tourists, as governmental payouts don't cover average tourist expenses.

  • Juan Mestre
  • 30 August 2024
🏨 In October 2023, Qatar's sovereign fund listed Barcelona's iconic W Hotel for sale at €260 million. CEO Luis Riu revealed Riu chain's interest in purchasing the hotel, mirroring their Madrid property's grandeur, but the deal failed as the owners were not selling. The beachfront W Hotel, managed by Marriott, stands at 98.8 meters in Barceloneta, designed by Ricardo Bofill. Its 2009 opening marked a reduction from a proposed 168 meters due to city silhouette concerns. Stays at the W range from €450 to €7,000 per night.

  • 29 August 2024
🏕 In the summer of 2020, Canarian hotels began housing migrants, with even four-star establishments joining the government-promoted plan to accommodate irregular immigrants. Notable hotels participating included MHC Arenales and Hotel Pocillos Playa, among others. Ángel Víctor Torres, then President of Canaries, initiated the plan but expressed concerns by December 2020. The initiative also reached mainland Spain, with accredited hotels in Valencia, Andalusia, Aragon, and Galicia. Aragon alone offers 722 hotel spaces for housing migrants.

  • Juan Mestre
  • 27 August 2024
📅 Air Europa secured a €475 million rescue from SEPI to prevent bankruptcy, influenced by a relationship between Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish PM Sánchez, and ex-CEO Javier Hidalgo. The €10 billion rescue fund was crafted by Koldo's associate Víctor de Aldama, per the Tax Agency's report. Air Europa received expedited aid within a month, while other companies waited up to 1.5 years. Gómez and Hidalgo met four times between June and September 2020; these meetings also involved Koldo García, adviser to former minister José Luis Ábalos. Acoso a los pisos turísticos: mano dura tras años de inacción

  • Juan Mestre
  • 24 August 2024
🏠 In Spain, municipalities are taking action against illegal tourist apartments after years of inaction. Sevilla plans to cut water to 5,000 unlicensed tourist homes and inspect ten daily. Barcelona aims to ban all tourist apartments by 2029, and Valencia is considering a similar ban, currently requiring owners to register properties. Madrid proposes new regulations without bans, while Mallorca imposed a €90,000 fine on each owner of 10 illegal tourist apartments. Public protests have pushed for these measures against tourism overcrowding and legal loopholes exploited by property listings on platforms like Airbnb and Booking.
