  • 29 December 2024
🚩 Vladimir Putin acknowledged Russian air defenses were active when an Azerbaijani plane attempted to land in Grozni, Chechenia's capital. He apologized to Azerbaijan's leader Ilham Aliyev but didn't admit fault for the crash. Aliyev suggested an external factor caused the crash, seeking accountability without elaboration. The Kremlin noted Putin's condolences to victims' families and well wishes for the injured. The White House confirmed the civilian plane was downed by Chechen air defenses, while Moscow joined the crash investigation.

🌊 The American Civil Aviation Authority has banned tourist airplane flights over Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, to protect the Navajo cultural area. Commercial flights are prohibited over the national park and half a mile beyond its boundaries. Despite the ban's impact on local employment, safety concerns persist following a 1986 plane crash in the nearby Grand Canyon that killed 25 people. Helicopter tours of certain Grand Canyon areas are still allowed.

Cancelan rutas a Rusia por temor a más ataques aéreos

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 28 December 2024
✈️ Azerbaijan Airlines canceled ten air routes between Baku and Russian cities as a precaution after a suspected air attack caused the crash of the Embraer 190 aircraft on Christmas Day. Qazaq Air from Kazakhstan also halted flights between Astana and Ekaterinburg for at least one month. Azerbaijani pilots refuse to operate in Russia citing safety concerns. The attack may have been Chechen in origin but within the Russian domain. The airline confirmed the external cause of the crash, ruling out aircraft or pilot issues. The final death toll stands at 38, with 29 survivors recounting the ordeal.

Cuba: cuantiosa caída del turismo español

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 28 December 2024
🌎 Spanish tourism to Cuba plummeted by 26.8% between January and November 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Other key markets also saw declines, with Canada down 5.2%, Argentina 4.8%, and the US 10.25%, while Russia and Mexico experienced slight increases of 4.4% and 3.2%, respectively. November 2024 alone recorded 44,272 fewer visitors than November 2023. The total number of tourists from January to November was 2,005,390, falling short of the 3.2 million forecasted at the year's start and the 2.7 million revised in September. Factors such as power outages, natural disasters, and perceived instability have affected Cuba's tourism industry, with December's high season unlikely to meet the revised goal of 2.2 million visitors set by Tourism Minister Juan Carlos García Granda.

La aviación europea aprueba el nuevo buscador de Google

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 27 December 2024
📣 Google, under threat of sanctions and compelled by the European Digital Markets Act, redesigned its search engine for aviation and presented it to the industry. Changes approved by airlines now feature a horizontal layout with uniformly sized boxes for both airlines and comparison websites, distinguished by a blue color. Prices match those listed on respective websites. Google risks a 10% turnover penalty for non-compliance but avoids it, maintaining competition by charging intermediaries for advertisements.

Antártida: el turismo ‘asalta’ el último reducto preservado

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 27 December 2024
❄ High season in Antarctica begins with tour operators predicting record-breaking sales, exceeding all historical records. Tourism in the region was not possible until 1991, except for official missions. That year, a Protocol for Environmental Protection was signed allowing tourist visits. Initially, only 6,400 visited, but before COVID-19, which started spreading in March 2020, annual visitor numbers had reached 75,000. In the summer of 2022 and 2023, visitors surpassed 100,000, with the previous year slightly exceeding 120,000. No permanent tourist accommodations exist in Antarctica; visits are via cruises with land (or ice) disembarkations. Each visitor is estimated to accelerate snowmelt by 83 tons due to soot. Some tour operators have limited cruise sizes, but Fildes Bay often sees queues of ships waiting to dock.
