Airbnb arranca el año con un desplome de beneficios

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 5 May 2025
💰 Airbnb's profits plunged by 42% in Q1 of 2025 to $154 million, down from $264 million in the same period in 2024. Despite the fall, revenues rose by 6% to $2.3 billion compared to $2.1 billion in the previous year's first quarter. Adjusted Ebitda slightly decreased to $417 million from $424 million in 2024. The company attributes the profit decline to higher stock-based compensation expenses due to staff expansion, depreciation of investments, and lower interest income. CEO Brian Chesky touts the resilience and adaptability of Airbnb's business model, highlighting growth in overnight stays despite a slight drop in Average Daily Rates (ADR).

Booking alerta del impacto de las políticas de EEUU

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 1 May 2025
💰 Booking warns of the potential negative impact of geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty potentially affecting travel demand. In their latest quarterly report, the company, despite a stable global trend, sees risks due to tensions that could impact consumer spending and partner behavior. Booking, with about 90% of revenues from abroad, is less vulnerable to U.S. internal fluctuations compared to Airbnb or Expedia. The first quarter saw $4.762 billion in revenue, up 7.9% year-on-year, with operating income up 34% to $1.092 billion. However, net profit fell 57% to $333 million due to non-recurring factors. Accommodation bookings grew to 319 million nights, exceeding forecasts. Gross travel sales hit $46.7 billion. Second-quarter growth is projected at 4%-6% for nights and 10%-12% for gross bookings and revenue, but external factors may affect these estimates.

Cataluña pospone el incremento de la tasa turística

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 30 April 2025
🏠 Generalitat de Cataluña postpones the increased tourist tax, initially set for May 1, to be processed as a law instead of by decree, delaying it by at least six months. The tax hike, agreed in February and approved in March, could see Barcelona's five-star hotel rates double from €7.50 to €15 per person per night, with the rest of Catalonia potentially reaching €11. A plan to allocate 25% of tax revenue to housing policy was proposed, with the remaining 75% split between municipalities and the regional tourism administration. The Gremi d’Hotels de Barcelona welcomes the delay, noting the tax could make Barcelona Europe's most expensive city for five-star hotels and create a competitive disadvantage compared to tax-free cities like Madrid and Málaga. ERC proposes differentiated tax hikes for Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia, with varying rates by season.
