  • Alex Cuenca
  • 11 December 2024
🏖️ Gloria Guevara, former president of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), is a strong candidate to lead the United Nations' Tourism (formerly UNWTO) and replace Zurab Pololikashvili, who has held the position since 2018. With over 35 years of experience, including leading Mexico's Federal Tourism Secretariat from 2010 to 2012 and working as a senior advisor for Saudi Arabia's Tourism Ministry post-WTTC in 2021, Guevara aims to focus on sustainability, innovation, and promoting public and private investment. The election will take place in Madrid in May 2025, with 34 voting countries; Guevara will need at least 18 votes to win, competing against Harry Theoharis, former Greek Tourism Minister.

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 11 December 2024
💰 David Moré Pacheco exits his nearly nine-year tenure as head of Grupo Nautalia's business and events division to become CEO of Mapa Group, part of the same business conglomerate. Grupo Nautalia's division has grown significantly over the decade, now accounting for about 39% of the company's turnover, reaching its best fiscal year. Moré's successors, Cecilio Martell and Rosa María Martín Núñez, will lead with the current team and new talent. Alberto Díaz, former CEO of Mapa Group, supports Moré until June for a smooth transition, while Carlos Díaz remains as operations director. This change follows two months after the conglomerate's formation, which includes Nautalia Viajes, Wamos Portugal, and others in Europe, and the debt clearance with SEPI due to Wamos Air's sale to Grupo Abra.

El clamor de los hoteleros: “Marlaska ha convertido los hoteles en comisarías”

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 10 December 2024
🔔 Jorge Marichal, leader of Cehat, criticizes the enforcement of Real Decreto 933/2021 since December 2, which mandates hotels to collect over 30 data points from guests, likening staff to border agents. He argues this increases operational challenges, invades privacy, and won't deter actual criminals. Concerns include data security over the three-year storage period and potential negative impacts on tourism, especially from the UK, Spain’s top market. He advocates for focusing resources on actual security measures, not overwhelming tourism operators with more regulations.

Canarias volverá a enterrar la ecotasa: “Es inconstitucional”

  • Alex Cuenca
  • 9 December 2024
🏖️ The Canarian Parliament debates a tax on tourist stays, proposed by the socialist group, aiming to impose a fee of €2 to €3.50 depending on accommodation type, rivaling rates in Baleares and Cataluña. The regional government opposes, citing potential unconstitutionality if excluding Canarian residents, a violation of non-discrimination principles. The opposition warns of the risk of double taxation with IGIC. The PSOE justifies the tax for covering tourism costs, noting tourism's 35% contribution to GDP against a mere 15% to the fiscal budget. Mogán municipality has enacted a 0.15 euro per night ecotax, deemed illegal by experts.
